Can You Wear September’s Stones Every Day?
Sapphire is the least demanding stone on this chart, which makes it easy to get complacent. The one thing worth planning around is heat, and whether heat is a problem at all depends on what was done to the stone before it reached you.
- Ask the seller what was done to the stone before you buy. Most blue sapphire has been through a heat process that is stable and permanent, and a few have had work that a hot cleaning machine will undo.

- The setting fails long before the sapphire does. Have the claws looked at whenever you have the piece cleaned.
Where September's Sapphire Meets a Table That Never Named It
Sapphire holds September alone today. Kunz's eight-list tally for the month never mentions it once.
Sapphire drew zero votes
Chrysolite took six of the eight votes when Kunz counted the older lists for September. Sardonyx took the other two. Sapphire, the stone leading today's modern chart, does not appear in that count at all.
Libra's zodiac stone is the one that swept the older tables
Turn to the zodiac chapter and Libra is entered under chrysolite, the same stone that took six of September's eight historical votes. Both old records land on one answer for once, and sapphire is outside it.
Virgo's carnelian carries into the first three weeks
A new month does not erase the sign before it. Anyone born September 5 falls under Virgo, so the zodiac chart hands them carnelian, quoted in full on the August guide, while the calendar table hands the same birthday sapphire.
Why Does September Have Just One Birthstone?
Nothing was ever added. The 1912 standardization by American jewelers fixed one gem per calendar month, sapphire took September, and every revision since has left that slot alone. Six months on the modern chart now carry two or three official names. September is one of the months that stayed put, so the modern answer and the older answer are the same word.
One word covers more ground than it looks. Sapphire and ruby are the same stone under two names, split by color alone, and everything that is not red gets called sapphire. A pink, yellow, green or colorless one is a sapphire, sold as a fancy sapphire, and the pinkish-orange variety from Sri Lanka has its own name, padparadscha. Shop windows still default to blue, so a piece advertised for the month is blue unless the listing says otherwise.

September splits between two signs, and the seam falls near the end of the month. Everything up to September 22 belongs to Virgo. From September 23 the sign is Libra.
