The name is Latin. 'Aqua marina' means sea water, and Roman sailors carried the stone aboard as insurance against a bad crossing. That job stuck. Two thousand years on, people still press it into the hand of somebody about to travel.

That zodiac tradition is separate from the 1912 calendar-month list, which assigns amethyst to February. Kunz's 1913 zodiac verse pairs Pisces with amethyst and promises relief from passion and care. The verse records a belief; it does not show that amethyst changes emotions.
