A Christian legend explains the red flecks as blood from the crucifixion falling onto green stone at the foot of the cross, which is where the English name comes from and why medieval reliquaries were carved out of it. The Old Vote March's Modern Pair Doesn't Match
March already carries two modern stones, and the older tables complicate the picture further. The plurality winner in Kunz's historical count is a stone that appears on no modern list, and the zodiac chapter sends the month's two signs in opposite directions.
Jasper won the old vote, and no modern stone is jasper
Kunz's page 316 comparison of eight historical tables gives March's largest share of votes to jasper, five of eight, with bloodstone close behind at four. Jasper does not appear on the modern pairing at all. The stone that won the century-old count and the two stones printed on today's chart are three different names for the same month.
Bloodstone is the one name that carried through
Of today's two March stones, only bloodstone shows up anywhere in the old count, and it shows up strongly, four votes out of eight. Aquamarine, the stone most jewellers actually stock for the month, is absent from that historical tally entirely. The pale blue half of the pair has no old-table record behind it; the green-and-red half carries most of what record March has.
Aries's zodiac stone already agreed with one half of March
Kunz's zodiacal chapter assigns bloodstone to Aries, covering March 21 through April 20, in a verse this project has not yet quoted: its four-line verse, which the Aries guide prints in full That is the same stone the month table already gives March's second half, so an Aries birthday collects bloodstone twice over, from two separate traditions.
Pisces's zodiac stone matches no March stone
The same chapter gives Pisces amethyst, a stone this project's February page already covers, and amethyst sits on the modern list for aquamarine's month or bloodstone's month. A birthday in the first twenty days of March collects the aquamarine-and-bloodstone pair from one system and amethyst from the other, with the old record offering no explanation for why the two were ever expected to line up.
Why Do March's Two Stones Look Nothing Alike?
Because they arrived from different places and were never picked as a pair. The 1912 American list recorded both for March without ranking them, following older tables that had already named bloodstone for the month. Aquamarine was the newer arrival and it suited a market that wanted transparent colour it could facet. Bloodstone belongs to the carved signet tradition, so the two have shared the chart while serving completely different tastes.
Retail settled this one without a committee. Walk into a jeweller asking for the month's stone and you will be shown aquamarine almost every time, because clear blue sells and opaque green does not. Bloodstone survives in men's rings, in carved seals, and in the older European lists where it is often the only name printed against March.
