Bloodstone: The Traditional Aries Birthstone
This guide uses Diamond as the modern Aries stone because most of the sign falls in April, whose standardized monthly list includes Diamond. Bloodstone comes from a separate, older stream of zodiac-gem associations, which varied by place and period. Bloodstone's tie to Aries is a separate custom that predates the 1912 list and was never part of it. Bloodstone as the Aries stone is not a shop invention. It comes from George Frederick Kunz's 1913 zodiac table, where a rhymed tradition paired each sign with one gem and Aries drew bloodstone. Kunz recorded the verse as old lore, not a claim of his own, and this page had never named that source before now.
Kunz's Aries Runs a Day Longer Than the Modern Range
Modern astrology sets Aries at March 21 to April 19. Kunz closed his table one day later, at April 20. Someone born on April 19 or 20 falls inside Aries by the older reckoning but sits on the edge, or outside it, by the chart most horoscope sites print today, and the stone that follows the sign follows that same one-day gap.
The Monthly Chart Names a Different Stone for Early Aries
Anyone born between March 21 and March 31 also falls under March's monthly birthstone list, which gives aquamarine as the modern choice and bloodstone as the traditional one.
