The topaz answer for Sagittarius did not appear from nowhere. It comes from a named, dated source, and that source disagrees with today's charts on exactly where the sign begins.
The traditional stone column has an actual author
Every traditional stone on this site's zodiac pages, topaz for Sagittarius included, comes from George Frederick Kunz's zodiacal gems chapter, published in 1913. Kunz was Tiffany's own gem buyer, and he set his sign-by-sign list down with a short verse attached to each one. Most sites that print “traditional birthstone” never say where the tradition comes from. This one does, and the answer has a page number.
Kunz starts Sagittarius a day later than modern charts do
This page runs Sagittarius from November 22 to December 21. Kunz's 1913 table runs it from November 21 to December 21. Someone born on November 21 gets topaz from the old tradition and turquoise, next month's stone in that same table, from the chart you are reading now. Both dates come from real books, drawn up decades apart, and both are still in circulation.
The month chart hands the same birthday a third stone
A Sagittarius birthday in the first three weeks of December also falls under the calendar's own November stone, topaz again by coincidence, since the 1912 trade list and Kunz's zodiac table agree there. Push into the last ten days of the month and the calendar switches to turquoise for December while the sign stays Sagittarius. Three tables, three purposes, and none of them were built to match the other two.
