Which Stone Is the Real October Birthstone?
Both of them are real. American jewelers standardized a birthstone list by calendar month in 1912, and opal held October on its own. Dutch traders carried the gem to Europe from Sri Lanka in the early 1700s under the Sinhalese word turmali, which meant mixed-color stones, and that plural sense never left it.

Tourmaline
Tourmaline is a boron silicate and really a family of related minerals, with elbaite the member most often cut as a gem. Its crystals frequently change color along their length, so one sliced crystal can show pink at the core and green at the rim, the pattern sold as watermelon tourmaline. Copper-bearing material found in Brazil in 1989 produces a neon blue-green called Paraiba, and it reset what buyers expect a fine tourmaline to be worth.
