Spinel
Almost no folklore attaches to spinel under its own name, because the trade spent centuries calling it ruby. Whatever protective virtue a medieval owner assigned to a great red stone was assigned to a stone they had misnamed. Crystal healing writers have been filling the gap since 2016, traditionally associating spinel with energy and endurance, young enough that a reader can watch a tradition being assembled in public.

Where August's Modern Three Diverge From the Old Tables
August's modern chart holds three stones, and none was the clear favourite when Kunz tallied the eight older lists in 1913.
Carnelian led the vote and never made the modern list
Across the eight older lists, carnelian took five votes for August and led the field outright. Sardonyx came second with three. Peridot and spinel, two of the three stones on today's chart, do not appear in that tally at all.

By starting with two and gaining a third a century later. Then in August 2016 the American Gem Trade Association and Jewelers of America announced spinel as an addition, the first change to the national list since tanzanite came in for December in 2002.
