Why Does May Get Emerald and Nothing Else?
Because the 1912 committee had an obvious candidate and later committees saw no reason to interfere. Emerald was already the spring gem in European practice, the American trade wrote it into the calendar month of May, and the 1952 revision that gave second stones to two other months left this one alone. Charts have been reprinted for a century without touching it. What that fixes is a month, though, and not a zodiac sign, which is where most of the confusion around May starts.

Colombia has supplied the benchmark material for four centuries, and the Chivor workings were abandoned after the colonial period and lost in forest until a Colombian engineer relocated them in 1896. Which Zodiac Signs Cover May Birthdays?

- Wash it in lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap and a very soft brush, then dry it with a cloth. Hot water alone is enough to start thinning cedarwood oil.
- Ask which filler was used and get the answer written down. Oil is traditional and needs redoing every few years; hardened resin lasts longer and is harder for a jeweler to reverse later. Laboratories grade the amount as minor, moderate or significant, and that grade moves the price.
- Warn any jeweler before repair work. Heat from a torch during sizing or retipping will drive out filler and can open a fissure permanently, so the stone should come out of the mount first.
- Choose a bezel or a protected setting for a ring worn daily, and take it off for gardening, gym equipment and washing up. Solvents, acetone and even some hand sanitizers attack the filler faster than wear does.
